Fewer than a dozen people live year-round in Civita di Bagnoregio, a settlement that has been shedding its own foundations for roughly 2,500 years. The village stands on a plug of volcanic tuff above the Valle dei Calanchi, a basin of grey clay ridges drained by the Torbido and Chiaro streams.
Etruscan builders cut the first drainage tunnels into that rock. An earthquake in 1695 took the old approach road, and since 1965 a single concrete pedestrian bridge has carried everyone who arrives. Civita's modern significance is more fragile. The novelist Bonaventura Tecchi, born in Bagnoregio, called it il paese che muore — the town that is dying — and the phrase stuck. Landslides continue to trim the cliff.
